This publication depicts the author who had experienced United States Air Force ROTC in college to being drafted by the local draft board, and to accept a Navy Pre-flight of sixteen weeks at NAS Pensacola, Florida. After his commission as Ensign, he completed navigation training and received his Naval Aviation Observer Wings. At this point, he proceeded to NAS Norfolk, Virginia where he began learning the traits of antisubmarine warfare.Entry into the first squadron, VP-10, was on deployment to NAS Sigonella, Sicily. With the advent of the P-3A, the squadron was split between NS Argentia, Newfoundland, Canada and NAS Keflavik, Iceland. The beginning was made in NS Argentia, Newfoundland, Canada when I flew and tracked a nuclear submarine. This event boosted me to many years of tracking numerous potential missile carriers. The P-3C was characteristic because the author led nine Naval Flight Officers to Burbank, California to receive training in this computerized aircraft. This formidable task was elevated when the writer was sent to VP-49, where he flew against the adversary and was victorious in twenty five flights against the submarine threat. The writer made many tactical decisions regarding ASW while serving in Commander Fleet Air Wings, Atlantic Topsham, Me. and in Commander Task Force Sixty Seven in Naples, Italy. His charge was to send messages daily about sonobuoy expenditures, hours, and the necessary Extended flights that were launched by a particular threat. The climax of the story, is when he was deep selected for command. As Executive Officer, his life withstood the loss of an aircraft and the many insurmountable problems from those who lost a son or husband. Pegasus Power was the author's leader and unfailing guide as Commanding Officer. The troops embraced and excelled all facets of mission, safety, and people. Their antisubmarine warfare was outstanding and received the Sixth Fleet Hook-em Award (ASW Excellence). It is hoped the Naval Flight Officer will retain equal opportunity with the Pilot to handle the intricate duties of command.
